What’s the benefit of SD Cards?

SD cards have many benefits over other types of media.

  • They are small so cheap to distribute.
  • SD cards can be written to again and again so useful if you content is updated regularly.
  • SD cards are available in a number of capacities.
  • SD cards can transfer data very quickly which is especially good for high resolution video or large files.
  • Many devises such as phones and tables only have SD card or Micro SD card slots.

 What is SD card Class?

The class of an SD card is used to identify the absolute minimum sustained write speeds. Cards can be rated as Class 2 (minimum write speed of 2MB/s), Class 4 (4MB/s), Class 6 (6MB/s) or Class 10 (10MB/s).  Class 10 SD cards therefore are faster (data can be written to then quicker) than a class 2.

Rather than give you a theoretical max speed which few devises would achieve the SD Association devised the class system to give an accurate guide to the sustainable speed you can expect to achieve.

Getting the correct class of SD card for your intended use is important so that data can be written to it quick enough. High resolution video requires more data to be written per second that a low resolution photo.

SD card class table of speed and usage

For standard definition video class 4, 6 or 10 is recommended.

For HD video a class 6 or 10 is recommended

For 4K video class 10 is recommended.
